Team Singapore delivered a strong performance at the Tunis 2025 World Para Athletics Grand Prix, held from 16 to 18 June in Tunisia, returning home with three medals as well as personal and season bests.
Among the standout performers was 27-year-old Maisarah Binte Mohamed Hassan, who claimed silver in the Women’s T35/T36/T38 100m final with a breakthrough personal best of 16.80 seconds on 16 June. Maisarah, who has cerebral palsy and competes in the T36 classification, is also the national record holder in the T36 100m — surpassing her previous best of 17.06 seconds set in 2022.
With this performance, she has met the qualifying standards for the New Delhi 2025 World Para Athletics Championships, as well as the 2025 ASEAN Para Games (APG).
“I’m really happy to win a medal and finally hit a new personal best. It’s taken a few years of hard work to get here, so this means a lot to me. I hope to keep improving and do even better in my events,” said Maisarah, who also competes in the 200m event.
Muhammad Diroy Bin Noordin, 33, added two bronze medals to Singapore’s tally, a meaningful achievement following his recovery from a lower back injury that had affected his performance at the Paris 2024 Paralympics. At the Tunis Grand Prix on 18 June, Diroy recorded a season best of 8.69m for his main event in the Shot Put F40 final, improving from his previous distance of 8.68m set in Paris last year and surpassing the 8.36m set at the Dubai edition of the Grand Prix earlier this year. This performance has qualified him for both the World Championships and APG. Diroy also competed in the Men’s F40 Javelin final, recording a best throw of 22.13m on the second day of the competition.
Diroy said: “It was tough not doing well in Paris last year, so I’m grateful to have won a medal at the competition. I know which areas I need to improve, and I’m motivated to keep training to come back stronger next time.”
Para sprinter James Ethan Ang, 24, made his return to international competition following an undergraduate student exchange programme in London and turned in promising performances. He recorded a season-best 11.75s in the Men’s T13 100m final on day one of the competition and followed that up with a 53.13s finish in the T13/T20 400m event on the last day. The latter result has also qualified him for both the World Championships and APG.
Looking ahead, Team Singapore will continue their local training and to sharpen their form ahead of the World Para Athletics Championships, which is set to take place from 27 September to 5 October in New Delhi.
