Juggling Training, Coaching and Running a Business

Why I Decided to Pursue a Career Outside of Sports:

I decided to explore a career outside of sports because, while I’m still actively training, competing, and coaching, I realised that coaching alone isn’t enough to cover my living expenses. The opportunity to take over an e-commerce business from my coaches came at the right time. Both of my coaches, who previously managed the business, had full-time jobs and couldn’t continue running it. They passed it on to me, and I saw it as a great side hustle to supplement my income. Since coaching is part-time due to my training commitments, the flexibility of the e-commerce business made it a perfect fit.

How I Got the E-commerce Job:

Getting the e-commerce business was straightforward. My coaches knew my training schedule and understood the challenges of finding a full-time job while training. Knowing my situation, they entrusted the business to me, believing I could manage it well. The transition was smooth, and it fit well into my schedule.

Impact of Pursuing a Dual Career on My Sport:

Balancing the e-commerce business with coaching and training required good time management. In the first few months, it was challenging and sometimes exhausting, but the flexibility of the business allowed me to adjust my schedule as needed. My coaches were very supportive, helping me manage my training intensity and commitments to work to ensure it didn’t affect my performance. Fortunately, it was a low-competition period when I took over the business, which allowed me to focus on managing everything without compromising my training.

Why It’s Beneficial for Athletes to Pursue a Dual Career:

Taking on a business is a new experience that gives athletes like me a different skill set. It teaches resilience, which is essential for managing both a business and a sports career. Running an e-commerce business, especially as a sole proprietor, requires commitment and motivates me to balance my time effectively. This experience has taught me valuable lessons in customer management and problem-solving, which are beneficial skills beyond sports.

Encouragement to Athletes Who Are Considering Pursuing a Dual Career:

Athletes need to understand that their sports career isn’t forever. Planning for retirement and thinking long-term is crucial. Encouraging athletes to take on a dual career helps them secure additional income and develop new skills, which can be valuable during and after their sports career. Sharing my experience of balancing sports and business shows how proper time management can lead to financial stability and personal growth.
